Some Mystery People Found

I first posted the names of my "mystery people" in 2002, hoping that someone would recognise some of them. Since then, some of these folks have indeed been connected to a larger part of the family. (Click the underlined name to go back to the main list.)

Mystery People Found -- Births

Person Family Connection
Ann Stanhope Cowbrough, b 1886, Gargunnock, Stirling Ann was the third of eight children of Walter Davidson (John C & Mary B. Davidson) Cowbrough and Mary Milray. The 1901 British census said she was 14, and gave her occupation as "factory hand in gunpowder factory."
Annie Coubrough, b 1887, St. Ninians, Stirling Annie was the eldest of six children of William Coubrough and Annie Souter. Little Annie's father, William, was the younger brother of Ann Stanhope Coubrough (above).
Annie McKim Coubrough, b 1890, Glasgow Annie was the youngest of nine children of William Coubrough (William C & Bethia Lancaster MacMillan) and Margaret McKim. Annie married James Robertson Veitch, son of John Veitch & Margaret Robertson, in 1917, in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland.
Bethia Coubrough, b 1890, Maryhill, Glasgow Bethia was the natural daughter of Bethia Lancaster Coubrough (Daniel C & Mary Wylie). Baby Bethia died in April 1891, at the age of 11 months. Her mother married James Madden in 1893.
Christina Thomson Coubrough, b 1889, Eastwood, Renfrew Christina was the natural daughter of Euphemia Coubrough. Euphemia was the youngest daughter (7th of 10 children) of John Coubrough & Mary Ewing, of Campsie, Stirling. Euphemia had previously been married to Stewart Raeburn, but they became estranged in the summer of 1882. The reason for the separation is not known, but Euphemia went to great lengths to ensure everyone knew she no longer had anything to do with Stewart. Obviously, it was not an amicable parting. A John Coubrough is said to be the father of all of Euphemia's second family, but we don't know which one it was, or if the children might have been using their grandfather's name. In any event, Christina married twice: once to Daniel McAllister and once to Robert Luke, but I don't have dates for either. Christian died 9 Aug 1954, iin Barmill, Beith, Ayr, Scotland.
David Coubrough, b 1901, Kelvin, Glasgow David was the second of six children of Malcolm Coubrough (David C & Mary Ann Brazier) and Isabella Markie. Malcolm and Isabella moved their family to Brantford, Ontario, Canada, in about 1915. In April 1917, young David tried to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force by giving his age as 19 and his birth date as 1898. The recruiter must have noticed that he was under age and sent him away because a couple of months later, the CEF record shows David at the recruiting centre in the next town down the road. This time he gave his age as 18 and his birth date as 1899. He was accepted, but someone must have still been suspicious because there is a later note on his file saying that he had been recruited as a minor and citing his birth certificate as the authority. David was already overseas in June 1917 when the birth certificate surfaced, but he was still released in October of the same year, "as a minor." David eventually married Evelyn MacDonald, but I don't know if they had any children.
Elizabeth Coubrough,  b 1891, Bonhill, Dumbarton Elizabeth was the second of six children of Malcolm Coubrough (Wm. C & Margt McEwan) and Isabella Hosie. She married Donald Metcalf and they had five children. Elizabeth died in 1924.

MacKay Smith. Essie and Charles were both only a few days old when they died in August 1896.
Euphemia Coubrough, b 1886, New Kilpatrick Euphemia was the eldest of four natural children (one of whom died in infancy) of Euphemia Coubrough, daughter of John Coubrough and Mary Ewing. (See Christina Thomson Coubrough, above.) Euphemia Jr. had two natural children before marrying Arthur McGettigan in 1905, in Barrhead, Renfrew. Both of these children died in infancy. Arthur and Euphemia had 8 more children together. Arthur died in Barrhead in 1947. Euphemia Jr. died in 1956, also in Barrhead.

Walter Rennie/ Walterina Cowbrough, b 1892, Haddington, East Lothian I previously thought that Walter Rennie had a twin sister called Walterina, and that they were the sixth and seventh of eight children of Walter Davidson Coubrough (John C & Mary B. Davidson) and Mary Milray. Walter and Mary moved to England sometime between 1897 and 1901. I found them there in the 1901 census, where a child named Walter Rennie was listed as a daughter, even though the birth registration said he was male. There was no sign of a child named Walterina, but I later found an index entry for a woman named Walterina Cowbrough who marrried in Ulverston (England) in 1916, and who must surely have been the same person. I have since found a notice from Mary Milray, in the Scots Register of Corrected Entries, stating that the child had been incorrectly registered at birth. She stated that the child was in fact a girl, and that her name was Walterina, not Walter Rennie.
